33 hours on one piece of work. I would hate to think about making a mistake that I couldn't repair.

I've always been impresessed by ice sculptures. It seems like it would be a difficult medium in which to work. I was just at one yesterday. One of the sculptors, a chef at a high-end country club, told me he could make as much money at sculpting as at being a chef.

The ironic side to this story is that if the guy had sculpted Mickey Mouse, then Disney may have very well sued him for trademark infringement. Average people are prohibited from making money on their art, when it includes any art work in the Disney collection. I have known people to have been contacted by Disney Corp regarding non-profit depictions of Disney characters in their art work.

I believe it is more a matter of corporate attitude.
The guy who did the Calvin & Hobbes comic strip refuses to license his merchandise to any one. His opinion is that no one can give Calvin the right treatment, but him. And he refuses to participate in any commercial Calvin & Hobbes endeavors beyond the strip and the book, although he killed the strip, I believe ten years ago. If you see Calvin & Hobbes on products anywhere, it is safe to assume that it is black market products.
Disney is all about the U.S. Dollar, and they are protecting their intellectual property to the Nth degree.
Other artists tend to be somewhere in the in-between, allowing their art to be represented to keep their work alive in the minds of their fans.
The Bugs Bunny crew allows commercial licensing of their products, the same as the Disney crew does, but they are not as Nazi in their approach as Disney.

That is an interesting point. Also, there are some huge ice sculpturing contests in Japan. I would like to know how that works, if they have Disney characters...
